Driving from Athens to Richmond over Memorial Day weekend has terrible, and not because of the weekend traffic. The weather was horrid. A major thunderstorm hit Athens the night before, which knocked out power for hours, but we ended up driving through the same storm for hours. Basically, we hit the tail end of the storm about one hour after we left town and stayed with it for 6 more hours. Horrible driving conditions. Thankfully everyone was taking it very slowly (35mph on I-85 if that give you any idea how heavy the downpours were). We had to get off the road in Durham, NC because the kids were antsy, hungry and we needed a break. Hank stayed in the car while we went into a McDonald's. It was the only time Ian and I were thankful to have a television playing at a restaurant (sports bars don't count because we don't take the kids to those). We saw footage of emergency response teams helping out a business that was trapped in a flash flood. After eleven hours of driving (Ian only drove because my foot was still in a boot) we finally arrived in Richmond, VA to stay with our friend Carla and her adorable sons Stanley and Lincoln.
